The Gift” is a film that fell between 4 diverse genres: drama, fantasy, horror, and mystery. So, this was an uncanny film for Keanu Reeves to star in. And the character he portrayed, “Donnie Barksdale” was quite a vile, repellent, and evil-hearted man. In “The Gift”, “Donnie Barksdale” was a wife beating adulterer, a menacing racist, and a wicked persecutor of Cate Blanchett’s clairvoyant character “Annabelle (Annie) Wilson”.

Storyline: “When Jessica King goes missing, all eyes turn to Annabelle Wilson. Not as a murder suspect but as a clairvoyant. Many of the towns folk go to Annabelle for help, and Jessica’s fiancée, Wayne Collins, turns to Annabelle for possible guidance. Annabelle feels that she can’t help, but this doesn’t stop her from constantly getting visions of Jessica’s fate.” Written by FilmFanUK at

It was difficult, if not impossible, to feel any empathy at all for the “Donnie Barksdale” character when he was framed for murdering the beloved “Jessica King” character. He was such a loathsome person, and it became evident that even the prosecuting attorney (portrayed by “Gary Cole”) did not care about his having been framed. Nonetheless, this particular attorney was having an affair with the murder victim before her untimely death, so he had no cause to be so judgmental himself.

“A glorious textbook example of a gifted film maker’s ability to transform a familiar genre and, thrillingly, to confound our expectations in the process.” Written by Susan Clark of the Detroit News

Keanu was so convincing in his portrayal of this character that I was quite proud of him. Although, I freely admit to disliking the grotesque personality of the aforementioned “Donnie Barksdale”. It was almost as though Keanu was channeling his nefarious (yet beautiful) “Don John” character from “Much Ado About Nothing” in this particular film. One of the biggest differences was that the “Donnie Barksdale” character was quite an insidious racist. Yet, all in all, I was riveted by “The Gift”, and enjoyed it thoroughly from beginning until the very end. So, please feel free to watch it, for those of you that may be interested in doing so.
