Under the Influence” was a 1986 made-for-television film about the negative impact of an alcoholic father’s drinking upon his family; his children, most specifically. Keanu Reeves portrays the character, “Eddie Talbot” in this film and acts alongside the late great Andy Griffith. “Eddie Talbot’s” father, “Noah Talbot” (the alcoholic patriarch), displays an unreasonable aversion toward him. I empathized with the hurt Keanu Reeves’ character, “Eddie”, was feeling; which is why he became an alcoholic, as well. He tried to live up to every expectation his father had for him, and always failed due to this incomprehensible loathing that “Noah Talbot” felt towards his own son.

I simply must admit that Keanu Reeves, as the character, “Eddie Talbot“, was quite the most attractive alcoholic that I have ever seen (which could be dangerous for certain individuals who hold such an attraction to men with substance abuse issues). I also certainly admit to developing a dislike for Andy Griffith’s character, “Noah Talbot” in this film. It is despicable when people with destructive issues or illnesses mistreat others horribly; particularly, those which they profess to love or care for. They even appear to enjoy dragging others down with them, and this kind of behavior is disgusting and inexcusable. Also, the “Noah Talbot” character, had been an alcoholic for so long that his illness had caused his family to become a tragically dysfunctional one.

Storyline: “A hard-drinking family man has been successful in his business despite his alcoholism. His daughter, a professional, struggles to meet her father’s high expectations while she becomes addicted to prescription drugs; his son, who works for him and who serves as both his whipping boy and his drinking buddy, is becoming an alcoholic like his dad. Then the father’s drinking finally takes its toll on his health, and he demands that his son bring him liquor in the hospital as his son’s life, and his daughter’s, fall apart at home.” Written by Morganalee at imdb.com

What was so incredible about this film is that most of the family members were in serious denial about “Noah Talbot’s” alcoholism (his wife, in particular). Although, the disease had destroyed his liver and caused severe hemorrhaging, when the attending physician conveyed the seriousness of the matter, some of the family members just could not accept the truth. Not only was his condition serious, but his alcoholism had negatively impacted his family members so much that a couple of his children developed traumatic substance abuse problems, including Keanu’s character “Eddie Talbot”.

Unfortunately, there are no movie reviews for this film. However, there does happen to be a Smart Rating that is scored at the number 80 (which is quite a Good rating). One thing I loved about this film is that Keanu Reeves’ character, “Eddie Talbot“, decided to change his life and seek treatment for his alcoholism toward the end of the film. And overall, this was a very engaging film; even though it was made-for-television. So, please feel free to watch it, if you would like to do so.
